Every now and then, a conversation pops up in the culture that makes you stop and say, “Hold on… we need to really break this down.”
I recently saw a post from someone with a decent following claiming that music review shows are the new scam in the music industry.
According to him, these platforms take artists’ money and don’t do anything for them—no connections, no real opportunities, nothing.
Let me be clear…
I don’t agree.
🎯 The Real Issue Isn’t “Scam”… It’s Expectation
Calling something a scam implies deception.
That means:
- Somebody lied
- Somebody promised something they didn’t deliver
- Somebody intentionally misled people
But that’s not what’s happening with most review shows.
A music review show is exactly what it sounds like:
👉 A platform where your music gets played, reviewed, and discussed.
That’s the service.
Nothing more, nothing less.
💡 What Artists
Think
They’re Paying For
Here’s where the disconnect happens…
Some artists submit music thinking:
- “This is going to blow me up”
- “This is going to connect me to industry people”
- “This is my shortcut to the next level”
And when that doesn’t happen…
They feel like they got played.
🧠 What You’re
Actually
Paying For
- 🎧 Your music heard by a curated audience
- 🗣 Real-time or recorded feedback
- 📢 Exposure across platforms (radio, social, website)
- 🔁 Potential ongoing support if the record is dope
That’s valuable—but it’s not magic.
🚫 Exposure Is Not a Guarantee of Success
Let’s keep it real…
You can:
- Get played on a platform
- Get posted on social media
- Even get added to rotation
…and still not blow up.
Why?
Because success in music comes down to:
- Consistency
- Branding
- Marketing
- Networking
- And most importantly… the quality of the music
🔑 The Real Value of Review Shows
If you understand how to use them, review shows can be powerful:
- They give you visibility
- They give you feedback you might not get elsewhere
- They help you understand how your music is received
- They can lead to long-term relationships
But they are a tool, not a shortcut.
💰 Free vs Paid Submissions
- Free submissions → reviewed as time permits
- Priority reviews → guaranteed attention, faster turnaround, detailed feedback
The difference isn’t “scam vs real.”
It’s:
👉 Waiting in line vs skipping the line
⚠️ Artists: Here’s Where You Need to Be Honest With Yourself
Before you call something a scam, ask yourself:
- Did they deliver what they said they would?
- Did I understand what I was paying for?
- Am I expecting one opportunity to change my whole career?
Because if you’re looking for a shortcut…
You’re going to be disappointed every time.
🏁 Final Thought
Not all review shows are created equal.
Some are better than others.
Some platforms really care. Some don’t.
But calling the whole space a scam?
That’s not accurate.
A better statement would be:
👉 “I don’t see the value in review shows.”
And that’s a fair opinion.
But for artists who know how to leverage them?
They’re part of the hustle.
