On a recent trip to Las Vegas, I was flagged down and offered some free prizes to sit through a time share sales presentation. I choose to do it to get the free stuff. I had been there for a few days and gotten a little bored . What the heck, I’ll get some free stuff and observe their sales pitch. As I sat through the presentation, I listened to my salesman explain to me how much I needed to buy this timeshare. I would save so much money on vacations if I purchase this timeshare. I had on one of my MyDetroitHustle t shirts, so he pitched me on how I could make money with my timeshare. If I didn’t want to use my timeshare, I could rent it to family and friends for a profit. He even went on to say how he made $2,000 the week of the Mayweather/ Connor MacGregor fight renting his place. I sat there quietly and listened to this guy’s presentation for an hour. Finally, it was t ime to close. I politely told him he made a great presentation as a salesman. I study sales and I thought he did a great job. Then, I dropped the bomb. Even though you made a great presentation, I have no interest in your product. On top of that, I don’t think there is any chance you will be able sell anyone on your product Right now. He tried every angle to deal with my objections, but he knew I was telling the truth. He eventually handed me over to another salesman to make one more try. The new guy quickly gave up. They decided to give me my gifts and get me out of the building as soon as they possibly could. They were clearly frustrated with me. What did I say that frustrated them so much?
I told them the truth. Their product is not essential. This is not the time to buy this product, no matter how well you sell it. I actually think it is extremely dishonest that they are trying to sell this product to regular people now. People are locked in their houses due to the corona pandemic. People can not gather in large groups. The very streets of Las Vegas we’re walking on were empty. Over 50% of the shops and attractions were closed. The hotels were almost giving away rooms for free to try to get people in the building. The working man has much bigger needs than a vacation rental.
The year 2020 has been catastrophic, but that does not mean there is no opportunity. While everything else struggles, essential businesses are making a killing. People still need food. They actually need it more than ever. Grocery stores are prospering. The lines for fast food restaurants are off the hook. Toilet tissue and cleaning supplies fly off the shelf. Delivery services are killing. My point is, while most people are locked in their house talking about what they are going to do when things return to normal, people that provide essential products and services are making a killing. Even in this time of entrepreneurship becoming cool, I feel like most people are missing the mark. I know a whole gang of people who are in business. Most of their ideas are clothing lines, make up lines, party planers, record labels, etc. There is nothing wrong with these businesses, but there is a disproportionate interest in businesses involving discretionary dollars. When no one can pay their bills, are you going to have a popping strip club? When unemployment is at an all time high, who is going to a hookah lounge? I’m very disturbed at how many people are sitting at home waiting on things to get back to normal. My question is, what are you going to do if things don’t get back to normal? Things probably are never going to be the same. Are you going to embrace change and get in on the opportunities available or wait for things to return back to how they use to be? Are you going to get in on providing products and services people actually need no matter what the economic climate or are you going to keep waiting for a time when everyone has extra money available to spend on junk? The choice is yours, but if you want to be recession proof, you need to get essential.
