MyDetroitHustle.com’s Detroit Iconic Playlist
As the sound of Detroit street music is taking over on mainstream radio, MyDetroitHustle.com has compiled a playlist of some of Detroit’s most iconic songs and artists that were building blocks for what the music is today. I remember like yesterday hearing Merciless Amir’s “A Day Without a Rhyme” playing on WGPR and trying to figure out how I could make a song that dope and get it on the radio. Hearing Awesome Dre’s “You Can’t Hold Me Back” brings me back to seeing him being on the same label and doing show’s with NWA and Eazy E. I had the opportunity to do some show’s with Detroit’s Most Wanted back in the day. “City of Boom” was dope. I remember the excitement from seeing one of their albums on the Billboard charts. Blade Icewood’s “Boy Would You” would come on in afterhours spots on the east and west side of Detroit and the club would explode. COI’s “Cash Rules” is a Detroit’s version of Wu-Tang’s “Cream.” It had a major run on local radio. When I think of “Oh Boy” by the Eastside Chedda Boyz, I think of how DJ Hen House would drop that joint at legendary strip club Erotic City, or was it Chocolate City then, and the club would go all the way up! “Streetlordz” by the Streetlordz is banging. It features Beanie Siegel and Freeway. The Streetlordz were one of the first crews to go out and secure features from national artists and their street promo was top notch. I see Doughboyz Cashout as a crew that watched successful crews that came before them like Streetlordz, Rock Bottom and Eastside Chedda Boyz and put their spin on the formula. “A Good Ass Day” is an example of the kind of anthems they dropped that rang out in the streets. Dice’s “What Up Doe” is a banger from one of the first albums I listened to as a fan by someone I know. His “Black Monday” is probably my favorite album by a Detroit artist ever. I end the playlist with Proof’s “Girls with the Boom.” Proof personified the whole Detroit hip hop community. You would be at the crib looking at MTV and see Proof on stage with Eminem, go to the strip club a half hour later and see him across from you at the bar. Rest in power Big Proof. MyDetroitHustle.com Playlist #15 has crossover appeal!!!
The MyDetroitHustle.com Playlist #15 is out now. This playlist is very interesting. It starts with a banger from Aida and Doza the Drum Dealer. After hearing this one you’re probably thinking this is going to be like the past couple of playlists-extremely hard. Then come Marv Won and Monica Blaire’s “Say My Name” which is definitely a hit with the write promotion and budget. I don’t mean underground hit. I mean on radio every five minutes hit. Labels and investors, this is a multimillion dollar song. Wake up!!! MBK Supreme comes next with a very dope song with a semi-sung hook that could be the next gold digger’s anthem-“Shopping in the Rain”. Undeniably dope! Nor Kin4life and Nejma Nefertiti come through with “Going Up,” another song with huge commercial potential. Bogustice makes his first appearance on a MyDetroitHustle.com playlist, coming correct with the bars on “Ngm.” Then, Slik Jack continues his reign as the king of all thing grimy. He and Ayoo Bigz absolutely murder this joint “From the Dirt.” It seems I’ve had a Slik Jack joint on repeat for the last few months. John Jiggs came to Detroit recently and gave a great performance. Since then, I’ve been digging in his catalog. I found this gem “Bear Hug” from his collab album with Shabaam Sahdeeq. Kidd Called Quest uses his secret weapon, the rimshot, to lace Pretty Bulli with an emotionally charged beat that she straight up bodies. Their song “Thank You” is another song I have on repeat. We end the playlist with a new joint from Guilty Simpson and Alchemist and a banger from Hood da Mayor and Passport Scoob. The MyDetroitHustle.com Playlist #14 is out now. This playlist is crazy. It starts out so incredibly hard. Piff Penny and crew set things off with a bang “Talking Politic.” Slik Jack comes thru with one of the dopest songs of the year “Paid Dues,” which I pretty much have been playing on repeat since the first time I heard it. Then, on the next song, “More Upscale Endeavors,” Smooth Haynes drops one of most incredible verses I’ve heard in a while. My man, drops punchline after punchline of straight heat. Well, this particular playlist is the type of album I would want to make. It’s all hard stuff. I usually make more balanced playlists, but this one, I just wanted to hear what I wanted to hear. No compromises. I could just see myself as an artist fighting with my label because they want me to make changes. Sometimes, you have to stick to your guns. This playlist is very hard and very dope. Let’s talk about Playlist #11. When putting this playlist together, I was coming to the realization that Nejma Nefertiti is really starting to find her groove. She’s always been dope, but now she’s starting to get in the zone with some of these producers and they are making magic. I already was feeling “Black Tea” but when I heard her and Napoleon Da Legend on “Generals of the 7 Seas” I went crazy. No way I could not put this joint on the playlist. This playlist also features a couple of artists from my new exclusive Facebook group, Jaymob and Mr.J. Both are dope and deserving artists that I’m able to support because in the group I’m able to keep up with what they have going on. Another first timer to the playlist is Isreal Porter. Playlist #6 is here and it starts off strong! The powerful baseline of Cydney Poitier’s “Sepatate But Equal” starts things off with a bang. Frank Nitt’s “Rhymesayers” is one of my personal favorite songs. This is a grown folk’s party joint that I pretty much kept on repeat for hours at a time. Big Bruh and J Deal’s “Top That” is a banger for the booming systems with an extremely catchy hook. To make a long story short, this playlist is packed with jams. Make sure you check it out.

This is one of my favorite playlists. “Hold it Down” by Apollo Brown, Che Noir and Ty Farris is one the best songs in the history of the playlist. “Gladiator School” is so very hard body. This Apollo Brown produced track is insane. This song features a beautifully chopped emotional soul sample over a tight drum pattern. Che Noir starts it off with subject matter fitting the feel of the track, discussing her background in Buffalo, NY and her rise to where she is today. No matter what she’s gonna hold it down. Ty Farris then comes through with his voice sounding sharp as a razor, lacingthe track with his skilled lyricism about holdin it down on the streets of Detroit. This emotional track combined with the superior lyricism of both MC’ s is a great way to start off a playlist.
“Gladiator School” Asun Eastwood, Big Ghost Ltd, Daniel Son, Estee Nack, Lukey Cage, Mooch, Rahiem Supreme, Recognize Ali, Rigz, Rome Streetz, & Ty Farris
Why is this song on the playlist? Because it is HARD! The song starts off with what sounds like some soothing elevator music, then things change drastically. It goes from what sounds like a dream to what sounds like the soundtrack of someones nightmare. The drums slap and the baseline is eerie as hell. Horror flick sounding effects seem to float by on the track like evil spirits. It’s 100% hard body. Over this nightmare, a legion of MC’s line up to take turns at spitting rugged word play back to back until the track ends. Me being from Detroit, the high point of the song for me is when I hear Ty Farris’ voice cuts through the track. I didn’t even know he was on here but I’m glad he was. He represented Detroit well. This song is on the playlist because it is one of the hardest tracks I’ve heard in a while.

“Grimy Outside” OT the Real & Ill Bill
“Grimy Outside” is produced by one of my favorite beat makers, Nickel Plated Beats. If you want to know more about this dope beat maker, check out the write up @MyDetroitHustle.com/Nickel-plated/. This song is a hard core boom bap joint. Both lyricists provide plenty of street imagery to this head nodding beat. By the time the track is over you’ll probably be repeating the song’s infectious hook,“ It’s grimy outside have your weapon in hand, cause we might go to jail but we’ll never get jammed. Nothing lasts forever stack as much as you can, and when the pressure’s on stick to the plan.“
“Restless” Big Bruh featuring Big-T Beatz & On Point
I’m really feelin’ this beat. At first I didn’t know who it was because it sounds a little different than what I expect from Big-T Beatz. Yes, this is another Big-T Beatz produced banger. This one is for the boomin’ systems. It’s for block. It’s one you two step to while drinking straight from the bottle. It’s a vibe. First up, On Point comes through with one of his patented rapid fire hooks to set the tone. Then Big-T Beatz…. man, Big-T Beatz went in! Big Bruh then proceeds to shut it down with a voice full of power and conviction. You can tell this man means what he says. What’s dope about the song besides the fact that it sounds great, is the fact that they’re talking about getting money to invest in clothing lines, real estate and other assets. If you’re out here grinding and that’s not what you’re trying to do, you got the game messed up. We need more artists to step up like this to give the streets the real game. This joint “Restless” is a certified banger.
“Yesterday” Sadat X, Guilty Simpson, Ras Kas & Cadillac Dale
“Yesterday’s” track is based around a haunting musical sample with a tight boom bap drum pattern. Sadat X uses his usual verbal dexterity to talk about how things used to be back in the day. Cadillac Dale soothes you between verses with his soulful hook asking, “What happened to yesterday?” Guilty comes in and reminisces from his point of view, asking things like, “ What happened to men squaring up man to man?” His verse is everything your come to expect stylistically from a Guilty Simpson verse. In Ras Kas’s verse, he longs for the good old days when he had an Atari game system with only one cartridge. The good old days when it took so little to make you happy. “Yesterday” is a track that brings back the feeling of the days when Sadat was making classics with his group Brand Nubian and a great addition to the MyDetroitHustle.com playlist.
