Friday, May 10, 2024 was a big night for Detroit hip hop at the Marble Bar. An event called the Bar Code, which featured a very impressive performance lineup, made for a magical evening filled with Detroit hip hop. I kind of started to get the impression that this event would be big when I saw the amount of influencers sharing and posting videos promoting the event. As someone who is interested in marketing, I’ve gotta say this was a very well promoted event, so I wanted to see how it would turn out. When i showed up the night of the event, I was not disappointed. I spotted Detroit hip hop heavyweights Trick Trick, Royce 5’9 and Bizarre in the audience. A who’s who of Detroit hip hop media was there including Abe from Detroit and B Boy Reg from the Funky Fresh In the Flesh podcast. Detroit Hometeam was also in the building. The event was hosted by Mz Korona and Awesome Dre, with DJ Los holding it down on the turntables. On the back patio, Nick Speed supplied the beats while Fat Ray hosted and rapped for like hours straight. I saw dope sets by Kid Vishis, MF 911 and Issac Castor. I also got to check out the omie John Jiggs and the Mxnxpxly Family, who came all the way from Long Island, New York to perform. They really set if off with a great performance. I was very impressed. Tash from the Alkoholiks turned things up with his brand of party rocking and Ras Kas, the headliner, blessed the stage with some serious bar work to close things down. I really enjoyed the performances, and spent time seeing and catching up with long time members of the Detroit hip hop community like Dice, Jack Frost, Slautah and P Gruv, as well as, members of the new generation like Ty Farris and Dango Forlaine. Again, the Bar Code was a very dope event. If I see this brand again, I will definitely be open to checking out what they do next.
