When I was a young man in my 20’s, I was heavily involved in the music business. I also had a full time job. With this full time job came house notes, car notes, utility bills, etc. While a job provided me with the resources to build a home studio and fund my independent record label, it robbed me of the freedom to travel to events and other opportunities out of town. Every book about the music business says that having a full time job is a bad idea. I am proof this is true. Once you get tied down with the obligations of adulthood and you experience some success, it becomes very difficult to do the things you need to do to chase your dreams.
The good news is, this is a new day. With the emergence of the gig economy, it is possible to make good money and still have the flexibility to chase your dreams. If you can come up with a decent car, you can make a living and have the flexibility to chase your dreams. If Uber, Lyft and Doordash were around when I was coming up, I could have worked to make the money to book studio time, produce records and buy equipment which is what I did with my jobs. What would have been different is, when a group of my friends took off to go to California to meet famous producers or go to music conventions, I could have gone. My job allowed me to invest in my music career, but I missed a lot of opportunities because I did not have the freedom to come and go as I please. If I took off like I needed to do to take my career where I wanted to take it, I would have lost my job, house and car. Today, the gig economy solves that problem. Recognize the opportunity, take advantage and chase your dreams.
