“Serene OG” is hip hop for grown folks. Former J Dilla collaborator, Frank Nitt of the group Frank-n-Dank, delivers the true school sound for the OG’s. The project starts with the King Micheal Coy produced joint “For You” which features Illa J. This groove sounds like it was influenced by Lionel Richie’s “Love Will Find a Way.” It definitely makes your head nod. “Rhymesayers” is another noteworthy cut. Frank and Jaz B kick clever rhymes over an infectious beat that features a continuous drum roll and a phat bass line that is sure to have you two stepping on the dance floor. On the “The Wave,” Frank-N-Dank are reunited and assisted by Serious to ride a bouncey wave reminiscent of their earlier sound. On “Questions” Frank flexes his grown man mack game on a younger lady over another thick baseline with tight drums. “Me Too” features more slick talk for the ladies by Frank, Jaz B and Mainesoul over a bouncey beat and another thick ass baseline. The album closes with “Grateful” which features a dope verse by Frank, then the dope instrumental track takes you out. It looks like this whole project was produced by King Micheal Coy and he did his thing. He supplied you with plenty of musical beats with thick bass lines and that bounce you expect from artists that come from the J Dilla family tree. All of the featured artists did their thing including my man Guilty Simpson on the track “Easy.” “Frank Nitt definitely did his part to deliver what he promised in the title-a “Serene OG”. This is definitely an album made by a grown man at peace with nothing to prove. The project is full of clever rhymes and beats to rock your party. This is music to have a good time to for the people that appreciative grown folks music. I envision seeing this album performed with a live band in an intimate setting and people just having a hell of a good time dancing. By far, my favorite track on the album is “Rhymesayers.” I have it on repeat in my headphones and you most certainly will be hearing it on the next playlist. Salute to Frank Nitt and King Micheal Coy for putting together a great project.
